Description :
The high voltage team is interested in electrical conduction in liquids, gases and solids under various field configurations. The study of dielectric dischages in different materials is of paramount importanace in the field of electrical ingineering.
Recent works have been concentrated on conduction of gas dielectrics in diverging electric field (tip-plane geometry). The study of corona discharges in sulfur hexafluoride and in SF6-N2 mixtures has been carried out using optical and electrical measurments.
Sulfur hexafluoride is an inert gas that is non-aggressive, colorless, odorless and virtually devoid of toxicity. However, at high concentration in the air it acts as an asphyxiant by displacement of oxygen and it is harmful to the environment. The substitution of SF6 is therfore, an obligation.
The most important uses of sulfur hexafluoride are in the field of electricity because of its considerable dielectric rigidity.
